Renewable Energy

The Quad Cities region is known for its renewable energy capacity, and has a nationally-ranked wind industry. Both Iowa and Illinois rank among the Top Ten states for existing wind power capacity, with 3,670 megawatts and 1,848 megawatts, respectively.

Iowa and Illinois each ranked among the Top Five states for new capacity added in 2009, increasing their capacity by more than 1,500 megawatts.

The growth in wind continues in 2010: Iowa has an additional 200 megawatts and Illinois has an additional 437 megawatts under construction.

MidAmerican Energy Company, a leading provider of electricity to the Quad Cities region, is No. 1 in the nation in ownership of wind-powered electric generation among rate-regulated utilities and has nearly 1,400 megawatts of wind energy facilities in operation, under construction and under contract in Iowa.
